Provider: Colour My World

Illustration – The art of visual interpretation & decoration of a concept or a text.

Build a strong creative foundation as we start out our journey through the 7 Principles of Art. In this Fall Term, we shall cover Emphasis, Contrast and Movement. After covering the basics, we’ll get experimental with diverse media and digital tools to create visually stunning mixed-media illustrations. Rhythm, Pattern, Balance and Unity will be learned in Term 2 as we organise all of the varied elements to create compelling and harmonious compositions!

Project 1 : Emphasis & Contrast

We’re starting out our journey through the 7 Principles of Art by learning about Emphasis and Contrast. We’ll look at how masters of both old and new have used these principles to their advantage, including master painter, Caravaggio, expert engraver, Gustave Dore, and comic book legend, Frank Miller. With one accent colour and the darkest ink available, participants will use pens and markers to play with negative space in order to create a Miller-esque artwork that would grab the attention of just about anyone!

Workshop outcome:

Frank Miller-inspired illustration made with ink pens, Pilot markers and POSCA pens (one accent colour).

Project 2 : Movement

Continue our journey through the 7 Principles of Art by focusing on Movement. By using elements like line, colour, and rhythm and with the help of watercolour pencil, ink and digital tools, participants will learn how to suggest physical action in a still image by creating a scene of their own and poses for their character of choice. Their artwork will then be brought to life through the making of an animated GIF (with Adobe Photoshop) by looping a series of images in rapid succession to convey motion and sense of humour!

(G6-9 participants opting for the digital pathway will need to bring a device with Photoshop or Procreate installed. A non-digital option is also available).
