Welcome to our Effective Learning Mandarin: Read & Write program! We know that moving from just speaking a language to reading and writing it can be a big step for young
children. That is why our classes are designed to turn everyday speaking and listening skills into a natural stepping stone for reading and writing.
Through our Whole Brain Thinking and Learning approach, we bring Mandarin to life. By mixing movement, art, and drama into every lesson, we keep children interested and happy while they learn to master characters and sentences with confidence.
How We Teach (Prep-Grade 1)
At this early stage, we focus on helping children connect spoken Mandarin to written words. Our teachers guide students to recognize characters, read short phrases, and start writing their very first words from day one.
We use active movement, art, and Chinese drama as teaching tools. This playful approach keeps young minds excited and makes it much easier for them to remember character strokes and basic sentence patterns.
Class Breakdown:
10 mins: Conversational Warm-up – Fun speaking and listening games to build confidence.
35 mins: Reading & Writing – Easy character recognition, learning stroke order, reading short sentences, and copying words.
15 mins: Creative Output: A fun wrap-up where children use what they have learned to draw and write simple sentence about themselves, their family, or their favourite things.
Grade: Prep – Grade 1
Day: Thursday
Time: 2:30pm – 3:30pm
No class on: Feb. 11, Feb. 25, Apr. 1, May. 13

How We Teach (Grade 2-3)
At this level, reading and writing become the main focus. Students build real reading skills by exploring Mandarin stories and articles of 200 to 300 characters and answering simple questions. From there, they move into creative story writing—learning to share their imagination through sentences, paragraphs, and short stories that have a clear beginning, middle, and end (with at least 5 sentences).
Our lessons follow the IB framework for inquiry-based learning, which means we use drama, games, and art to help the syllabus come alive. Students might act out a story or draw a picture to discover new vocabulary before they start writing. Our teachers support students as they learn to express bigger ideas in Mandarin with growing independence.
Class Breakdown:
15 mins: Conversational Warm-up – Friendly speaking activities to help children share their thoughts and ideas
20 mins: Reading Comprehension – Reading 200-300 character stories together, learning new words in context, and talking about the story as a class.
25 mins: Creative Story Writing – Step-by-step practice in building sentences and paragraphs. Children write their own stories on fun themes like Our World, My Family, My School, My Favorite Holiday, and Someone I Like.
